With the smallest population of Hamton Roads' seven cities, Suffolk is desirable yet not too overcrowded. Suffolk is home to the Nansemond River and part of the Great Dismal Swamp. Suffolk is also known for their peanuts. Planter's Peanuts was established in Suffolk in 1912 and remains a vital part of the Suffolk economy today. Suffolk Public Schools operates 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, and one alternative school. Large employers in the City of Suffolk include Unilever, Lipton Tea, Wal-Mart, Target, QVC, and two major modeling and simulation companies, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
Suffolk is also proud to have Louise Obici Memorial Hospital acquired by Sentara Health System.
