Chesapeake is a diverse city with urban areas as well as many square miles of protected forests and wetlands, including a substantial portion of the Great Dismal Swamp.  Bordering North Carolina, Norfolk and Portsmouth, Chesapeake is also home to a portion of the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway.  Chesapeake is formally divided politically into six boroughs: South Norfolk, Pleasant Grove, Butts Road, Great Bridge, Deep Creek and Western Branch.  Private pilots or skydiving enthusiasts love that we have The Chesapeake Regional Airport, a public use airport owned by the Chesapeake Airport Authority. 

Chesapeake, Virginia is the hometown of 4 x World Kickboxing Champion Bubba Blackhawk Walters who also attended Deep Creek High School. It is also the off-season residence of New York Mets' third baseman David Wright who went to Hickory High school, and the hometown of the Washington Redskins' Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall. NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd was also raised there and went to Indian River High school, where NBA superstar Alonzo Mourning also attended. Chris Richardson, a finalist on American Idol: Season 6 also resides in Chesapeake.

Chesapeake, Virginia is also the hometown for the following baseball players: BJ Upton of the Tampa Bay Rays; his brother, Justin Upton, right fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks; Michael Cuddyer of the Minnesota Twins and Michael E. Mitchell, outfielder, for the Asheville Tourists/Minor League "A" Team of the Colorado Rockies. BJ Upton graduated from Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake. Justin Upton, Michael Mitchell, and Michael Cuddyer are graduates of Great Bridge High School.
